At approximately 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) Police received a report of a human-deer incident on a private property near Walla Walla in Walla Walla County.
Two individuals saw a young mule deer buck entangled in wire and attempted to free the animal using bolt cutters. During the incident one individual, an adult male, became entrapped in the wire as the buck attempted to get free. In the process, the man was gored in the face with an antler point. The two men drove to the local hospital where he was treated for his injuries. WDFW Police Officers arrived shortly after and located the buck. Due to the level of entanglement, the animal was dispatched.
How to report wildlife encounters
For immediate public safety issues, wildlife violations, or injured or dangerous wildlife, please call the WDFW Police at 360-902-2936 or email WILDCOMM@dfw.wa.gov, or call 911.
Like other wildlife, deer will defend themselves and their young if they feel threatened, and can seriously injure people and pets. Remember to check your surroundings and keep pets leashed and don’t allow them to chase, lunge at, or approach deer or other wildlife.
