The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is saddened to share the passing of Commissioner Victor Garcia.
Appointed to the Commission in 2025, Commissioner Garcia filled a Western Washington position on the Commission. He earned a Bachelor of Science in zoology from the University of Washington and worked for National Marine Fisheries Service and as a commercial fisherman in the Bering Sea region. Victor earned a master’s degree in science education at Vanderbilt University. He taught in Nashville, returning to Washington to teach math and science. His flagship course was Advanced Placement (AP) Environmental Science, where he emphasized habitat, clean air, water, and conservation. An advocate for community science, he worked with his students on monitoring and restoration projects.
"Commissioner Garcia loved this state, and he cared deeply for fish and wildlife,” said Jim Anderson, Commission Chair. “He was ready to do the hard work, and he will be missed."
“Commissioner Garcia leaves a lasting legacy from his work on the Commission to care for the fish, wildlife, and wild spaces that he was so passionate about,” said Kelly Susewind, WDFW Director. “I extend my deepest condolences to Commissioner Garcia’s friends and family.”
The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission is a panel appointed by the governor that sets policy for WDFW.
