It was one of those flush it and forget it games for Lower Columbia College.

The Red Devils made 34 percent of their shots and had 27 turnovers, but were able to come away with a 61-40 win over Green River in a NWAC West Region women’s basketball doubleheader on Wednesday at Truman Myklebust Gymnasium.

Despite the struggles, the Red Devils improved to 9-7, 1-0 in the region.

“We haven’t played in a week and half and were sluggish,” LCC coach Lucas Myers said. “We have to learn that we can’t take anyone for granted. Our defense played fine in holding them to 40 points.”

The Devils’ defense stepped up in the fourth quarter, holding the Gators to 14 consecutive missed shots before Ashley Duranleau hit a short jumper with 15 seconds left. In all, Green River shot seven percent for the quarter, including missing all nine of their 3-pointers.

LCC wasn’t much better in the final period. The Devils made 13 percent of their shots (1-8) which included missing all four of their long-range shots.

“The fourth quarter was sloppy and we missed some shots,” Myers said. “When you’re up 20 you don’t get a lot of calls. It’s about battling through it and being tough. The players off the bench got good minutes in the fourth, but collectively we missed a lot of shots.”

LCC trailed 13-11 after the first quarter, and scrapped its way to a 28-19 halftime lead. After halftime, the Red Devils found their stride in the third quarter by outscoring the Gators 27-11. Nizhoni Wheeler led the Devils’ charge in the period, scoring 13 of her game-high 25 points in the period. She also finished with 11 rebounds and five blocked shots.

“The third quarter is more representative of who we are,” Myers said. “Green River was aggressive on defense and put a lot of pressure on our guards, We showed some weakness mentally in dealing with it.”

The Gators defense held LCC to 34 percent shooting, 21-61. At the other end, the Red Devils allowed the Gators to make 17 percent of its shots, 11-65.

Emily Packham added 12 points, and Kenya Lorton had 11 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Shasta Lofgren grabbed nine rebounds and dished seven assists, Madeline Jacobson had seven rebounds and blocked four shots, abd Melenaite Kata pulled five rebounds,
