We lived a half block from the lake. Our street was lined with tall chestnut trees. Dad was working the graveyard shift at the mill when the Columbus Day Storm blew through Longview. Mom thought it best that she, my two older brothers and I sleep on the main floor in the living room that night. We prayed for our safety. When I awoke the next morning most of the chestnut trees were destroyed. A large branch from the tree in front of our house had broken off and had blown over the top of the house. It punched a hole in the roof taking the TV antenna with it. I was very young but I remember there being a lot of damage and loss all over the local area.
