Kelso advanced 10 wrestlers to Mat Classic, after finishing just a shade behind No. 1-ranked Mount Spokane in the 3A Region IV Tournament on Saturday at Rogers High in Spokane. The Scotties tallied 200.5 points, including three champions, while Mount Spokane finished with 236.5 points.

Alan Luff (106 pounds), Bryce Miller (120) and AJ Hoggatt (182) all won regional titles. Derick Soto (126) and Christian Freund (138) made the finals.

“All three of those champions did a nice job,” coach Bob Freund said. “They did what they had to do to get the win.”

Luff topped Mountain View’s Noah Messman, who beat Luff in last week’s district finals. Miller earned a 4-1 decision over Mount Spokane’s Casey Howerton. Hoggatt earned a 3-1 decision over Mount Spokane’s Tayven King.

Soto fell to a defending state champion, Blake Haney of Mount Spokane, and Freund injury defaulted after battling the flu all week.

“If they both wrestle like they’re capable, they could see each other in the state finals,” coach Freund said of Haney and his son.

Also qualifying for Kelso were Jordan Miller (132), Brayden Liebe (152), Ben Bergonzine (170), Blake Fowler (195) and McKinnley Franklin (285). Jakob Webb (160), Jovani Jimenez (126) and Francisco Flores (138) will go as alternates. David Perry missed the regional meet with a knee injury.

2A Regional: Woodland qualified five wrestlers for state, R.A. Long pushed through two, and Mark Morris one from the Region 1 meet held Saturday in Tumwater.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to Mat Classic XXX during Feb. 16-17 at the Tacoma Dome.

Centralia edged out rival W.F. West 126.5-124.5 to claim the team title. Woodland placed fifth with 95.5, RAL was 13th with 33, and MM 16th with 24.

Four of Woodland’s five wrestlers advanced to their respective regional title matches. Josiah Sanders was champion at 113 pounds, and finishing second were Judeah Sanders (113), Luke Parrish (160), and Jacob Flanagan (195). JJ Fuerst placed fourth at 120.

RAL’s Owen Enriquez finished second at 152, and Eric Howard was fourth at 220. MM’s Lane Williams was fourth at 160.

Girls Regional: Woodland’s Ashlyn Daugherty and Mercedes Holter of Castle Rock won their respective weight classes in the Region III meet held Saturday in Aberdeen.

Union cruised to the team title with 149.5, followed by Aberdeen with 129.5. Kelso placed third with 108, Castle Rock was sixth with 70.5, and Woodland was 12th with 29. Kalama finished 17th with 20, R.A. Long 23rd with 14, and Mark Morris 27th with five.

Daugherty won the 100 pound title, and Holter was the champion at 155.

Placing second for Kelso were Ashley McGhee (105) and Eva Medina (235), and finishing third were Ciyree Sams (115), Kyla Shoddy (120), Makayla Roggow (140), and Makenna Vegh (145).

Also grabbing second place finishes were CR’s Kylee Jacobs (110) and Makenna Speed of Kalama (130). CR’s Sadee Huckleberry was third at 135, and Aiyanah Valencia of R.A. Long was fourth at 235.
