The 2017-18 prep sports Winter season officially started today. All basketball players, wrestlers and swimmers turned out for their first practices.
Bowlers have already had a jamboree and start their first matches today. Basketball games will start up in the next two weeks with most teams getting in just a couple league games, if any, before the Winter Break.
On Christmas Eve, our annual Preps+ Basketball Magazine will appear in print editions of The Daily News with more content than ever.
The special edition will have 64 pages, up from 56 pages in past years, of comprehensive breakdown of each of the 30 local teams to go with plenty of additional content, including our Power 8 Rankings and preseason all-area team.
Speaking of all-area teams, we are currently in the process of crafting our all-area volleyball team and football team and those will be released in the coming weeks.
And let’s not forget our four remaining fall teams — Rainier, Naselle, Toledo and Kalama football squads.
No. 11-ranked Rainier will play in the state semifinals against No. 2 Santiam Christian at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hillsboro Stadium.
Naselle will play No. 3 Almira-Coulee-Hartline at 1 p.m. Saturday at Montesano High School in the state quarterfinals.
Toledo takes on No. 2 Napavine in the state quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Friday at Tiger Stadium.
No. 1 Kalama, fresh off a thrilling overtime victory over Adna, will play Pe Ell/Willapa Valley in the state quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Friday at Kalama High School.
We, of course, will have staff at each of those games as football season winds down.
