Editors note— This story was planned for the Winter 2019 Preps+ magazine. It inadvertently was missed and instead Wahkiakum girls ran twice. Here is the boy’s team preview story.
The Wahkiakum Mules are walking onto the court this year hoping to make Cathlamet into a basketball town.
The goal is to improve over last year’s 9-14 record and make a run for the district boys’ title.
“We have some potential this year. Our morale is really good this year. Basketball wasn’t really an emphasis for people. But this year we see we can succeed, so that energy is going to be fun to be around. I’m really excited for that fact that other people are going to be excited this year,” said junior Logan LaBerge.
Head coach Todd Souvenir said the energy the Mules bring to the court every day shows they want more.
“We’re really excited. We have a lot of good momentum. As a whole, the program is just really exciting,” Souvenir said.
The team seems to be meshing better, junior Jake Leitz said.
“The effort has been really good all around, especially compared to past year’s. We have pretty good leaders this year,” Leitz said.
Their plan to make districts is to focus on defense and practice, practice, practice.
“We have some really special kids. We’ve got guys spending time. Practice ended at 8 o’clock, and I had guys here in the gym until 9. That’s a change. It’s a good thing to see,” Souvenir said.
The Mules want to be able to rely on more than “one really good player,” Souvenir added.
“This is probably the first time since I’ve been coach that, at any time, I’ll have four guys on the court that, if they’re having a good night, they can score 30. It’s not going to be a scenario were we have one guy averaging 20 or so points a game. It’s going to be a team effort,” Souvenir said.
Leitz said he is hoping the team-oriented excitement has seeped from the locker room into the community. The Mules have set high goals, Leitz said.
“We’re looking to make a statement,” Leitz said.
