For the first time in school history, the Woodland Beavers boys’ soccer team will be playing in a state quarterfinal match.

Jackson Finn scored goals in each half as the Beavers held on for a 2-1 victory over Sequim in the first round of the 2A State Boys’ Soccer Championships on Wednesday at Peninsula College in Port Angeles.

Woodland (13-4-2) plays Sehome in the state quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Saturday at Civic Stadium in Bellingham.

Sequim took a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute on a header, but Finn tied the match eight minutes later when he converted a Jesse Thrall feed. In the 55th minute, Finn put away a Thrall assist for the match-winner.

Toledo/Winlock United 4, Bush 3: Brandon Cruz netted an assist from Andreas Malunat in the 69th minute to complete the comeback for United in the first round of the 1A State Boys’ Soccer Championships on Wednesday in Winlock.

United (16-0-4) plays either King’s Way or Seton Catholic in the state quarterfinals at a site and time to be determined during May 18-19.

Bush scored goals in the sixth and 18th minutes, but Gustavo Barragan netted an unassisted tally as United trailed 2-1 at the break. Bush pulled ahead 3-1 in the 47th minute, but Barragan scored off a feed from Tima KozuVakov in the 60th minute, and Isaac Garibay had an unassisted tally in the 66th to set-up Cruz’s match winner.


Southwest 2A District Championship: R.A. Long’s Josie Nickerson, Clarissa Escudero of Mark Morris, and Woodland’s Rayleah Trice and Abby Bozarth all grabbed top 10 finishes during the final round at the Lewis River Golf Course on Wednesday in Woodland.

The top 20 individuals advance to the 2A Girls State Championship at the Meadowwood Golf Course during May 21-22 at Liberty Lake.

Nickerson carded a 36-hole score of 88-86 for 174 and third place, Escudero had rounds of 84-93 for 177 and fourth, Trice finished seventh with 95-92 for 187, and Bozarth was eighth with 93-96 for 189.

Also advancing to state are RAL’s Piper Nguyen (99-99) and MM’s Grace Hedlund (90-108) tied for 12th with 198, and MM’s Valorie Worden with 111-101 for 212 in 19th place.

Columbia River won the team title with 118 points. MM was second with 115.5, RAL placed sixth with 68, and Woodland was seventh with 67.


Castle Rock 2, Forks 1: Payton Kessler scattered two hits, allowed a walk and struck out 10 batters to lift the Rockets to an opening round win in the Southwest 1A District Tournament at Fort Borst Park on Wednesday in Centralia.

CR (15-5) was in the fifth inning against Elma in a tournament semifinal game when it was halted for rain.

Against Forks, Logann Golden wsa 3-3 with a double and an RBI, Gracie Kimball was 1-3 and scored a run, Sadee Huckleberry was 1-1 with a walk, and Kerianne Cline was 1-2 with an RBI.

Toutle Lake 12, Toledo 7: Toutle Lake exploded for eight runs in the sixth inning to claim a quarterfinal win in the Southwest 2B District Tournament at Fort Borst Park on Wednesday in Centralia.

TL (17-4) was slated to play Pe Ell/Willapa Valley in the semifinals, and Toledo (12-10) was to face Morton/White Pass in a loser-out game later on Wednesday, but rain halted further play in the tournament.

TL had 14 hits, with Casey Wentz collecting two doubles and scoring twice. Keeley Studebaker-Smith was 2-4 with three RBIs and two runs, Katelyn Redmill was 2-3 with a double and an RBI, Jordyn Grabenhorst was 2-4 with two RBIs, Sienna Rudd was 2-3 with two runs and an RBI, Kendal Bennett was 2-3 with an RBI, and Maddie Hald added a double and an RBI. Jamine Florek allowed seven earned runs on 12 hits with six strikeouts through 6 1/3 innings, and Kaylee Florek pitched two-thirds of an inning with a strikeout.

Toledo collected 12 hits. Haleigh Holmes hit two home runs, collected four RBIs and scored twice, Kyleigh Holmes was 3-4 and scored twice, and Payson Hoiseck was 2-4 with a double and two RBIs. Kyleigh Holmes pitched six innings, allowing 12 earned runs on 14 hits, four walks and five strikeouts.

Adna 14, Winlock 1 (5 innings): The Cardinals were unable to bounce back from an 8-run third inning from Adna in the quarterfinals of the Southwest 2B District Tournament at Fort Borst Park on Wednesday in Centralia.

Winlock (15-6) was scheduled to play Ocosta in a loser-out game, but rain halted the next round of games. It’s undetermined when the games will be played.

Raychel Squibb was 3-3, Karlie Jones was 2-3, and Jenna Jones had a hit and an RBI. Karlie Jones pitched two innings, allowing nine earned runs on five hits and three walks. Jenna Jones tossed two relief innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.


Kaino honored by state: Ilwaco’s Alex Kaino was recently named a Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Athlete of the Week.

Kaino earned the honor after winning the 100-meters, 200, 300 hurdles and was part of the top 4x400 relay team at the Pacific League Track Championships in Raymond.
