Ellie Leitz and Macie Elliott posted double-doubles as the Wahkiakum Mules pulled away in the second and third quarters to claim a 69-54 nonleague victory over Clatskanie on Monday in Cathlamet.
Leitz finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Elliott had 18 points, 11 assists and six rebounds as the Mules won their season-opener.
“You could tell it was our first game since the first quarter was sloppy,” Wahkiakum coach Rob Garrett said of the Mules’ 16-13 deficit. “We settled down in the second quarter and started playing great.”
Wahkiakum outscored Clatskanie 43-26 in the second and third quarters.
“(Olivia) Sprague and (Shelby) Blodgett are both very good players for sophomores, but our seniors showed them they’re a couple years ahead of them,” Garrett added.
Sprague led Clatskanie (1-2) with 20 points, five rebounds and four assists. Blodgett had a double-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds, eight steals and five assists, Alexis Smith added eight points, five rebounds and two assists.
“We lost to a very good Wahkiakum team,” Clatskanie coach John Blodgett said. “We struggled defensively and in the halfcourt offense. We’re young, and we’re going through some growing paings against good teams.”
Also for Wahkiakum, Kimberlee Watkins grabbed eight rebounds, Jansi Merz had six rebounds, and Charlie Ashe and Mckensi Fluckiger pulled five rebounds apiece.
Woodland 56, Kelso 40: Kelly Sweyer had 16 points and four assists, and Payten Foster added 11 points and four steals as the Beavers claimed a nonleague victory on Monday at home. Also for Woodland (2-0), Nicole Guthrie added 12 rebounds, Audrey Adams pulled 10 rebounds, and Kaija Olson made six steals.
For Kelso (1-1), Natalie Fraley had 17 points, and Capri Franzen and Alexis Kleven added seven points apiece.
Elma 58, Toledo 38: Kal Schaplow had 24 points and six rebounds, but the Indians dropped a nonleague matchup at the George Murdock Gymnasium on Monday in Toledo. Also for Toledo (1-1), Kyleigh Holmes grabbed four rebounds, and Gracie Madill dished four assists.
Heritage 61, R.A. Long 47: Jacob Thompson scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds, and Tanner Rybnikar added 11 points as the Lumberjacks dropped a nonleague game on Monday at Joe Moses Court. RAL is now 0-2.
Columbia River 1957, Kelso 1782: Kaylee Price rolled 173-319, and Zoie Rodman added 165-307, but the Lassies came out on the short end of a Greater St. Helens League match on Monday at Triangle Bowl.
Mark Morris 1832, Mountain View 1518: Brooklyn Boudreau rolled 191-354, and Alexa Mejia added 187-345 for MM in a Greater St. Helens League victory at Big Al’s on Monday in Vancouver.
Evergreen 1870, R.A. Long 1467: The Lumberjills dropped a Greater St. Helens League match at Big Al’s on Monday in Vancouver.
