Toutle Lake’s boys’ basketball team will get another shot at Toledo. The Ducks held off a gritty Ilwaco squad 65-61 on Wednesday at W.F. West High School in Southwest 2B District Tournament first-round play.
Cam Swanson and Nate Hoff each scored 17 points as the Ducks and Fishermen held close the entire night. Ilwaco boasted a 33-32 halftime lead after a strong second quarter, but the two teams were tied 47-47 going into the final frame.
Daniel Whiting paced the Fishermen with 17 points, Alex Kaino scored 15, Reese Tynkila finished with 13 and Calvin Baze chipped in 10. John Glenn added nine rebounds.
“We had it,” Ilwaco coach Tim Harrell lamented. “Experience won in this situational ... But for the most part, I’m very proud of the way we played.”
Toutle Lake will face Toledo in the district quarterfinals on Saturday at either Montesano or Rochester. Ilwaco drops into the consolation bracket will face the loser of Winlock and Adna on Monday at a location to be determined.
Winlock 58, Chief Leschi 44: The Cardinals pulled off the Southwest 2B District Tournament first-round upset on Wednesday at Rochester High School by playing a style they hadn’t played all year. Not wanting to go up against the Warriors’ athleticism, coach Nick Bamer tasked his fast-paced squad to slow things down.
“It was a leap of faith to ask them to do it,” Bamer said. “They were able to execute and get it done.”
After an 84-70 win over Ocosta put the Cardinals into the first round, Winlock allowed just 44 points in the slowed down game. Carter Whitehead finished with 19 points, Nick Patching added 15 points and Bryce Cline finished with 12 points.
Coleson Richendollar hauled in five steals and five blocks and Dawson Hall chipped in seven points and eight rebounds.
Winlock faces Adna in a district quarterfinal game on Saturday at a location to be determined.
Mark Morris wins coin-flip: The Monarchs won the coin-flip with Columbia River on Wednesday afternoon and will enter the Southwest 2A District Tournament as the Greater St. Helens 2A League’s No. 1 seed. They will host the winner of Hockinson and Tumwater on Saturday.
This also sets up a road where the Monarchs could rematch with W.F. West in the district championship game on Friday, Feb. 16, at Saint Martin’s University. If the Monarchs make it to the gym in Lacey, it would be MM’s 17th district title game appearance in 18 years.
Naselle 58, Lake Quinault 32: Lilli Zimmerman paced the Comets with 16 points as Naselle cruised to a 32-18 halftime lead and eventual first-round Southwest 1B District Tournament victory. The Comets will face Taholah at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday in Ilwaco for a winner-to-state, loser-out district semifinal.
Jackie Steenerson chipped in 11 points on Wednesday, and Kenzie Glenn added another 10 points. Taylor Gudmundsen finished with six points and six assists.
Mary M. Knight 44, Three Rivers Christian 31: Bailee Williams-Wallace finished with 17 points, 20 rebounds and seven steals but the Eagles’ season came to a close in the Southwest 1B District Tournament. TRC closed with a 7-12 record.
“The team came out with a lot of energy and intensity,” first-year coach Chris Toms said. “We had a lot of open looks, but nothing was falling.
Bobbie Jo Gushman added seven assists and Marissa Baker finished with seven rebounds.
Mark Morris 62, Hockinson 48: The Monarchs solidified a Southwest 2A District Tournament first-round home game after topping the Hawks in a seeding game in Ridgefield on Wednesday. The Monarchs will host Centralia on Friday.
Kalina Makaiwi finished with a career-high 14 points, including eight in the third frame, to help the Monarchs, who also got double-doubles from Libby Bartleson and Alexis Troy. Bartleson had 22 points and Troy had 14.
