In his first high-school basketball playoff game, Kalama freshman Jackson Esary scored 17 points to lead the Chinooks to a 51-32 win over Morton/White Pass in Southwest 2B District Tournament action on Thursday at W.F. West.
Alex Dyer scored six points, had eight rebounds, three steals and three blocks. “They keyed on him a lot, but he did a lot of other good things,” Kalama coach Wes Armstrong said. “He was fantastic on defense. “
Grant Vandenberg chipped in 10 points and “took over the fourth quarter defensively,” Armstrong said. Kaleb Rashoff scored just one second-half point. “Grant took it upon himself, and I’m real proud of the effort,” Armstrong said.
Kalama plays Ilwaco, currently slated for Saturday, at a time and location to be determined.
Mary M. Knight 60, Three Rivers Christian 40: The Eagles season came to an end on Thursday with the Southwest 1B District Tournament defeat. TRC ended the year 11-11. They graduate six seniors. No other information was available at press time.
Elma 63, Castle Rock 16: The Rockets shot just 3 of 33 from the field in the Southwest 1A District Tournament opener on Thursday in Elma. Payton Kessler led the team with five points. “We couldn’t find the basket tonight,” coach Kim Karnofski said. “Unfortunately, we had too many turnovers. You can’t turn the ball over against a good team like that.”
The Rockets will play the loser of Tenino and Stevenson, scheduled for Friday. That loser-out game will be played Tuesday.
With snow and ice in the forecast, athletic directors spent Thursday changing schedules and crafting contingency plans to avoid the least impact to postseason athletics. Here’s the changes we were made aware of:
2A basketball: All Southwest 2A District Tournament first-round basketball games were moved to 6 p.m. Friday. The locations remain the same.
2A swimming: The two-day event at Dick Mealy Memorial Pool was changed to a one-day event, held Friday. Warmups will start at 12:15 p.m. First event will begin at 1:30 p.m. and the event will last to 4:15 p.m.
3A basketball: Kelso boys’ basketball’s West Central/Southwest Bi-District Tournament game with Wilson on Friday was cancelled. Contingency plans, and potential bracket reconfiguration were in the works on Thursday afternoon. All Friday and Saturday bi-district games in the 3A and 4A bi-district tournaments were cancelled. The new schedule was not released as of press time on Thursday.
3A/4A swimming: The district meet was scheduled to go on as planned at Gaither Pool in Kelso. If conditions get bad on Saturday, two options were presented to determine state spots, Kelso athletic director Bob Freund said. Preliminary times could be used, or Saturday’s events could go on and any swimmer that could not make it, would be disqualified. The decision on which route administrators would take depended on weather conditions.
Girls wrestling: Weigh-ins were moved to 9:30 a.m. and the Regional was slated to start at 11 a.m. Saturday in Olympia.
3A wrestling: The Regional was slated for Inglemoor High School north of Seattle. Bob Freund described it as “in a neighborhood on a hill.” The plan as of Thursday afternoon was to hold weigh-ins at 10 a.m. and matches starting at noon. If buses were unable to make it up the hill, the event would be moved to Edmonds-Woodway HIgh School and weigh-ins would start at noon.
