Riley Kirk paced Kelso boys’ golf team in Monday’s 3A District Tournament at Tri-Mountain Golf Course. He shot a 94 in the first round of the two-day event, and sits in 11th place.
The top five teams and an additional six golfers advance to the bi-district tournament after Tuesday’s play.
Also for Kelso, Kaden Martin and Alex Neves shot 96s and were tied for 13th, and Caden Gardner and Canyon Rader shot 97s and were tied for 15th place.
Mark Morris 6, R.A. Long 0: Austin Humphrey won 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 at first singles and the Monarchs earned a clean sweep in the Civil War tennis match on Monday. Also winning for MM was Victor Bogin (6-1, 6-0) and Ashton Harvey (6-0, 6-0). In doubles, Ben Haukaas and Gabe Slind won 6-0, 6-2, Eric Chen and Tino Cemulini won 6-1, 6-4 and Owen Johnson and Jake Habedank won 6-3, 6-2.
Kalama 3, Onalaska 0: Melanie Martinez scored twice and the Chinooks (11-1) rolled to the Central 2B League home victory Monday. Katie Sutherby also scored and added an assist, and Ryann Bailey lended two helping hands. Jenna Burnell played well in defense, and Mary Morrell had the shutout.
Napavine 2, Winlock 1: Cheleena Squibb registered 10 saves and Alexa Barragan scored in the 75th minute of Winlock’s Central 2B League home loss Monday. The Cardinals (2-10) host Life Christian on Wednesday.
Prairie 2, Kelso 1: Ashlee Bakunowicz scored in the 19th minute on a feed from Tally Connors, but the Falcons countered with a pair of second-half goals to hand the Lassies the Greater St. Helens 3A League defeat. Ally Harman made five saves and Shelby Hiatt played well in defense for Kelso (6-3-3, 3-3 league).
“The first half we were playing well, but the second half we started playing slow,” coach Kemal Vejo said. “We started playing safe, and not playing to the gameplan.”
Lower Columbia 2, Green River 2: All four goals were scored in the first half of the NWAC West Region bout on Sunday.
Kayla Willis and Sierra Thornock were credited with the Red Devils’ scores, as Karen Gonzalez and Jessica Jude registered the assists. Kennedy Werner made eight saves for LCC, which countered each of Green River’s scores before settling for the draw.
LCC sits in fourth place in the Wset Region at 4-3-1, and are 6-4-1 overall. The Devils host Tacoma on Wednesday at Northlake Field.
