The Kelso City Council Position 6 has two newcomers running for the vacancy with Larry Alexander’s retirement: Lisa Alexander and Thomas Loren.

I have worked with both of them in committee work and community events. Both have a passion for Kelso and want to make a positive difference.

The online Voters Pamphlet has laudatory things to say about both of them. Perhaps I can add a few distinctions to help those who are undecided. Thomas is working locally and attending Washington State University-Vancouver, where he studies public affairs and drama. Lisa has focused on child care and community volunteering.

In a meeting setting, however, Thomas’ advantage is listening and analyzing. If constructive criticism is offered, Thomas weighs it and appreciates the feedback. With regard to policy, I was disappointed when Lisa wanted the needle exchange program stopped even though her family has personally been touched by the drug crisis.

I am a Cowlitz County resident but am unable to vote in either city council election.

I do want city council members elected who deliberate wisely and with heart, and “play nice” with others.

For these reasons, I am a strong supporter of Thomas Loren for Kelso City Council.
