After many failed attempts, in December 1903, Orville and Wilber Wright finally got their flying machine off the ground. The airplane was born. In their excitement, they sent a telegram to their sister, Katherine. It said, "Flew 120 feet. Will be home for Christmas." When Katherine got the news, she ran to the local newspaper office and showed the telegram to the editor. He glanced at it and said, "How nice, the boys will be home for Christmas."
The editor had completely missed the point! Yes, it was nice that the boys would be home for Christmas, but one of them, Orville, had just piloted the world's first motor-powered flight by a heavier-than-air machine. That was the big news.
Often, the big news is missed at Christmas. Many get caught up in the gifts and decorations. Those things are nice, but they are not the big news. The big news of Christmas is that Jesus Christ was born into this world and became a man in order to save sinners by his death and resurrection.
May you and yours experience the joy of celebrating the big news of Christmas.
