Recently we received a letter from the United States Postal Service about wanting to switch to the large, community mailboxes. It appears that these letters were sent out to most in the Longview area.
The reasoning behind this, they say, is to cut down on the theft of mail. Most in our neighborhood have a mail slot that drops mail directly into the home. Unless someone breaks in, mail is safer using the current delivery system that it ever would be in a community mail box. According to the correspondence, people are to sign and return the form only if they agree with the change. I don’t agree with the change, but there doesn’t seem to be any official way to express that to the post office.
There also doesn’t seem to be any way for us to monitor whether the USPS will abide by the emphatic no of many in our town. For the record, I’m against these changes to the mail delivery system. I would like to state that if the USPS were really interested in cutting down on theft, perhaps they could figure out how to make packages less visible from the street. UPS and Fed Ex can manage to deliver a package and not prop it up against my front door for all the world to see.
