I noticed the Bunker Hill Cemetery tour on July 13 is going to showcase logging and the lives of loggers and the men and women who worked in logging camps. Life in the logging camps was difficult and I hadn’t realized that women, often called “flunkies” lived and had important roles in the camps. Cookhouse duty, waiting on tables and packing lunches were jobs for the women. They started early and worked long days. Great food in large quantities kept the loggers happy and their morale high. There were other duties too, such as laundry, sewing and cleaning. Many of the women married the men they met at the camps. I’m looking forward to learning more about logging, life in the logging camps and the lives of men and women in the early days at the Bunker Hill Cemetery tour on July 13. Tours start every 30 minutes from 5pm-7:30pm. Suggested donation is $5. The Bunker Hill Cemetery is about 12 miles west of Longview off of SR4 at 353 Bunker Hill Road, Longview.
