Letters: Don't believe it

Don’t believe everything you read in the newspaper, especially if paid for with a full page ad.

The recent ad by Northwest Innovation Works prominently states they will mitigate all greenhouse gases produced in Washington. Their mitigation plan states mitigation will take place as near as possible in southwest Washington. Is this believable?

Within the state, NWIW will produce at least 1 million tonnes of GHGs every year, according to environmental statements and SWCAA air permit. The EPA states 1,176,922 acres of U.S. forest are required to sequester that much CO2e in one year.

There are 1,166 square miles, or 746,240 acres of land in Cowlitz County. There is not enough land in Cowlitz County to mitigate 1 million tonnes of CO2 with trees, let alone vacant land suitable for tree growing. There are not enough trees in the county to mitigate that much GHG, even if NWIW were to buy them all and say they will not be cut for 40 years. (Which of course would also put a lot of people out of work.)
