I am a resident of Kalama. I live approximately four miles upriver from where Northwest Innovation Works (NWIW) hopes to build a methanol manufacturing plant. I strongly oppose this project.
I just learned, from your news story, that the Port of Kalama’s commissioners were set to vote June 12 on an amendment to NWIW’s lease that would prohibit exported methanol from being used for fuel.
NWIW’s plan is to export this methanol to China. Honestly, how will the commissioners — or anyone else — track how the methanol produced in Kalama is used in China? I would say this is the most ridiculous idea I’ve ever heard of, but I’ve already used that argument for the plant itself.
