Portland attempts to crackdown on the illegal street racing network

Portland police arrested five people this weekend on reckless-driving charges and other alleged crimes tied to the city’s illegal street-racing network.

Police continue to try to crack down on street racers, who often gather in large crowds on Swan Island, Marine Drive and other areas of the city.

This weekend, officers tracked the participants on Marine Drive and Northeast Airport Way using an airplane and on-the-ground officers. They pulled over more than two dozen cars for speeding, reckless driving, expired tags and other offenses, and towed four vehicles.

“The illegal speed racing community is getting the message that this behavior will result in citations, towed vehicles and arrests,” Sgt. Brad Yakots said in a statement.

Marine Drive is one of the city’s most dangerous roads, due to the constrained two-lane nature and its location atop a levee adjacent to the Columbia River.

Sean Philip Moore, 44, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving and five counts of reckless endangering because officers were “nearly struck due to Mr. Moore’s conduct,” Yakots said.

Isaiah Lamar Brown, 22, was arrested and charged with reckless driving, reckless endangering and forgery in the first degree.

Darling J Hinejosa, 23, and Guillermo Estrada Vargas, 22, were also charged with reckless driving.

Michael Dean Bennion, 38, was arrested and charged with reckless driving, driving under the influence and failure to perform duties of a driver.

Last year, The Oregonian/OregonLive reported extensively on the street-racing network’s Portland underbelly. From 2015 to 2018, at least four people died in street-racing related crashes.

This year, the city has tried to continue to step up its enforcement on the underground scene. Just last month, 2 people were arrested and 22 cited on street-racing related charges.
