A local woman was killed at about 5 p.m. Monday when a northbound Amtrak passenger train hit her car at a crossing about 4 miles north of Kelso.

“It appears the woman was attempting to get to the crossing before the train,” said Chief Deputy Charlie Rosenzweig with the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office.

No one else was involved. The identity, age and city of residence of the driver was expected to be released Tuesday morning, officials said.

The crossing at the Horseshoe Bend Estates near Pleasant Hill Road does not have flashing lights or arm bars, Rosenzweig said. It does have railroad crossing signs.

The Amtrak train sat on the tracks for a few hours before being allowed to leave at around 7:40 p.m., Rosenzweig said.
