For the sixth year, Volkswagens will cruise through downtown Kelso on Saturday as part of Avery’s annual Show and Shine car show.
Linda Hooper, co-owner of Avery’s Air-Cooled auto parts store in downtown Kelso, said the event is one of the largest Volkswagen car shows in the Northwest. Last year, they had 163 cars and about 500 visitors. This year they are expecting around 200 cars, Hooper said Tuesday.
The show starts at 9 a.m. Saturday at Avery’s at 1205 South Pacific Ave. Most of the cars will be inside the 1.5-acre business, but some will also be out on the sidewalk.
The family friendly event will include raffle prizes, music, vendors, food from the Rotary truck wagon and an “old fashion engine blow” where attendees can guess how long it takes for an engine to blow up after running without any oil in it.
Over the years, the show has attracted all kinds of customized and original Volkswagens: buses, bugs and dune buggies.
There is a $10 suggested donation per car which will benefit local charities. Walk-in visitors are free.
The show ends at 2 p.m. with a cruise of all the cars through Longview and Kelso.
Hooper said events like the car show bring people to Kelso where they spend their money on food, lodging and recreation. And it’s a chance to see cool cars, she added.
“If you’re into your Volkswagen and you’ve been spending all year fixing it up, it’s a nice place where you can come and show it.”
