Spirit Lake Memorial Highway/ State Route 504 will reopen to Johnston Ridge Wednesday, two days before the 38th anniversary of Mount St. Helens'  eruption on May 18, 1980.

Each year, because of heavy snowfall, the Washington State Department of Transportation closes the highway for the winter at Coldwater Lake, about seven miles short of Johnston Ridge.

Once the threat of significant snowfall has passed, WSDOT maintenance crews clear remaining snow, debris and rocks from the roadway in preparation for summer travelers.

Johnston Ridge is the location of a tourist observatory that features views across the Toutle Valley directly into the volcano's crater.
