One-act plays return

Students from R.A. Long High School perform ‘The Empty Chair’ during the High School One Act Play Festival at Stageworks Northwest Theatre in January. The one-act plays return for Stageworks’ 2018-19 lineup.

Longview-based Stageworks Northwest has revealed its five-production slate for the 2018-19 season.

The lineup includes comedies from Shakespeare and Neil Simon, a radio-themed Christmas production and the Gilbert and Sullivan classic “The Pirates of Penzance.”

On Sept. 7, Stageworks begins its season with Shakespeare’s “The Merry Wives of Windsor.” In the comedy, a man low on cash tries to court two wealthy married women, resulting in jealousy and revenge.

In October, the production group will transition into a drama with Donald Marguiles’ “Time Stands Still,” about a journalist couple who must adjust to a normal life after falling in love while capturing dangerous, adventurous stories.

In time for the holiday season, Stageworks will showcase “Orson Welles’ Christmas Carol,” adapted by local actor Larry Fox, starting Nov. 30. “Christmas Carol” will give audiences onstage and backstage access to a radio cast performing the Charles Dickens classic, accompanied by Christmas songs and commercials.

“The Pirates of Penzance” will sail into Longview on March 15. The comic opera tells the tale of a group of pirates off the coast of southern England, as a pirate apprentice informs the crew that he intends to leave.

The season concludes with Neil Simon’s debut play, “Barefoot in the Park,” on May 17. In “Barefoot,” a newlywed couple receive a post-honeymoon visit from the bride’s quirky mom, and the pair attempt to set her up with their neighbor.

According to a Stageworks press release, the group also will host individual events throughout the year, including the high school one-act play in January, the drag event “Golden Girls Live” in February, and in June,  “The King’s Meal,” a children's play written by Longview resident John Henry.
