KALAMA — The Port of Kalama’s road improvement project at Spencer Creek Business Park is expected to continue through the end of the month.

Port of Kalama commissioners Tuesday approved a $145,700 change order to the project to install ground cover on the ditch alongside Kalama River Road.

Eric Yakovich, economic development manager, said the ditch was going to be grass, but it would be too difficult and costly to mow. The ground cover will save the port about $50,000 per year in maintenance costs, he said.

Yakovich also said the port is working to address concerns that the roundabout is too small for some vehicles. This will likely require another change order to the project, he said.

The port contracted with C&R Tractor and Landscaping for $5.6 million to resurface roads, add sidewalks and landscaping, as well as build a new roundabout at Spencer Creek Business Park. Construction began in April.

The project is expected to wrap up in about three weeks, not including the possible change to the roundabout, Yakovich said.
