38th Street rockslide

A rock slide on the west side of 38th Avenue south of Walmart shoved the containment barriers onto the road and closed it to all except emergency vehicle traffic over the weekend.

Officials have closed 38th Avenue in West Longview through the weekend after a rockslide early Friday morning dumped debris on the roadway and knocked out power to about 70 Cowlitz PUD customers.

The slide occurred just before 5 a.m. in the 2000 block of 38th Avenue south of the Ocean Beach Walmart, where the arterial passes through the cut through Mount Solo. The closure cuts off a link between Ocean Beach Highway and Industrial Way.

Motorists must detour on Mount Solo Road, Willow Grove Connection Road or Washington Way.

One one of the roadway lanes has been reopened but it is for emergency vehicle access only at this time because the slopes above the road are unstable, according to Cowlitz County emergency dispatchers.

Boulders rolled into power poles, causing power lines to strike trees and short out, said Cowlitz PUD spokeswoman Alice Dietz. The PUD lost no equipment and had power restored quickly.

City road officials were not immediately available to report on how long it will take to restore normal traffic through the area.
