Incumbent Cowlitz County Sheriff Mark Nelson and Patrol Sgt. Brad Thurman will attend an election forum this Tuesday to answer questions from the community about their vision for the sheriff’s office.
The event, hosted by Mark Koelsch and Longview City Councilman Ken Botero, will take place 7 p.m. at the Canterbury Park retirement community, located at 1335 Third Ave, Longview.
Attendees will have the opportunity to fill out question cards, which Koelsch, who is moderating the forum, will present to Nelson and Thurman.
Nelson has been sheriff since 2009 and has championed tackling drug abuse, mental health issues, and school safety concerns. He’s been endorsed by many of his fellow sheriffs and has served as president of the Washington State Sheriff’s Association.
Thurman has won support from several local police chiefs and campaigned on a platform of reforming the sheriff’s office. He’s been endorsed by the Cowlitz County Deputies and Sergeants Guild and has criticized elements of Nelson’s leadership at the sheriff’s office.
