A Rainier man was severely beaten last Saturday at a barbecue and will require reconstructive surgery to repair his shattered eye sockets, according to news accounts.

Gabe Bonwell was at a barbecue and bonfire with some friends on Fern Hill Road when three people he did not know arrived, according to a KPTV story.

Bonwell and the unknown men got into a verbal dispute that quickly escalated, leaving Bonwell with a broken nose, shattered eye sockets, and bleeding in the corneas of his eyes, according to the KPTV report.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help Bonwell with medical expenses. It had raised $2,600 of a $5,000 goal as of Wednesday afternoon, and had been shared over 1,400 times.

“Gabe is currently being cared for at home with family until the doctors feel he is ready for surgery,” the page says.

Police are searching for the men who attacked Bonwell.
