A drunk driver crashed through a fence and his car went airborne, landing on two other vehicles parked on private property in the 3400 block of Ocean Beach Highway Tuesday afternoon, according to Longview police.
Officers responded at about 1 p.m. after an eastbound Mitsubishi Eclipse veered off the highway and into a nearby yard. The driver drove through a chain-link a fence and hit a tree stump, launching into the air, said Adam Surface, the investigating officer.
The car came to rest atop a Mazda Miata and Ford pickup parked in the yard, Surface said. The vehicles were unoccupied, and no injuries were reported, Surface said.
The driver was booked into the jail Tuesday on suspicion of drunken driving, third-degree driving with a suspended license and a felony warrant out of Cowlitz County, Surface said. Police did not release the driver’s name Tuesday.
Police cited drunken driving as the cause of the accident, Surface said.
Barry Tidd, owner of the Ford, said he was “sitting there (in my home) enjoying my cup of coffee and heard a crash.” Tidd said he looked out the window just in time to watch the driver land on his and his son’s vehicles. His wife, Verna, suspects both the cars are totaled.
“All of this is going to fall on our insurance,” Verna Tidd said, noting that the driver told her that he was uninsured.
The accident was contained in the Tidds’ yard, so it did not block traffic on the highway. However, passersby slowed to get pictures of the stacked vehicles.
A crew from Carl’s Towing cleared the accident within the hour.
