A Lakeside Industries worker was severely injured Tuesday when the driver of a passenger car struck the back of a piece of paving equipment and pinned the worker in the middle, the company’s manager said Thursday.

The veteran worker, whose name and age were not disclosed, is in stable condition at Oregon Health Sciences University, where he was taken by LifeFlight helicopter, said Tim Salberg, manager of the Longview-based paving company.

The injury occurred at about 12:15 p.m. on an Apiary Road paving job in the Rainier area, Salberg said. He did not know what caused the driver to strike the worker and paver. The driver was injured and taken by ambulance to St. John Medical Center. An update on his condition was unavailable.

Salberg said the accident was the company’s first lost-time injury in about a decade.

Oregon officials are investigating the accident.
