An equipment malfunction at the Clatskanie Sewer Plant is causing intermittent releases of partially treated sewage into the Clatskanie River, just west of the city.

In a Sunday evening news release, City Manager Greg Hinkelman said that the plant has experienced a mechanical failure with its sweep arm, leading to discharges of the partially treated wastewater.

The city is working with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and will update residents as more information becomes available, Hinkelman said.

Sewage carries several microbes, such as the E. coli bacteria, that can pose a health risk for humans.
