Search teams found a man Wednesday afternoon who vanished Tuesday evening while picking mushrooms with a friend near Abernathy Creek, west of Longview, the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.
Kevin Carey, 61, of Longview was found in good condition, Cowlitz County Undersherrif Corey Huffine said.
“He was hungry, he had complained he’d been having some muscle cramps,” Huffine said. “He said he just got turned around, came down the wrong side of the saddle.”
Carey had been missing since about 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. He was last seen in a remote, forested area about 3.5 miles from the end of Abernathy Creek Road.
Cowlitz County Search and Rescue volunteers began searching for Carey that evening and were joined Wednesday morning by Clark and Wahkiakum county searchers.
At about 11:15 a.m., several hunters alerted searchers they had seen Carey on a logging road, and by 12:43 p.m. Carey was located in good spirits and without any apparent injuries.
