April 13, 1946—Sept. 24, 2019
On Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2019, Dennis Gerald Mackey, loving husband and father of three children, went to be with the Lord at the age of 73. Dennis was born on April 13, 1946, in Longview, WA, to Lester and Geraldine (George) Mackey. He was the youngest of two sons. Dennis attended R.A. Long High School, where he graduated in 1964. He went on to further his education at Lower Columbia College and Centralia Community College. After college, Dennis worked for the City of Longview before becoming employed at Cowlitz County Road Department, where he retired after 30 years of service. On Sept. 18, 1965, he married Glenda Gayle Keller. They raised two daughters, Rai-Shel and Denean, and a son, Jason.
Dennis had a passion for giving back to his community. He enjoyed coaching and mentoring young athletes of all ages. He began his coaching career for Longview Little League in the early 1970s. By the mid-1970s he moved to Kelso, WA, and coached both baseball and football. In 1993, Dennis continued his baseball coaching career at Castle Rock High School, before retiring as the head varsity baseball coach in 2005. Over the next 13 years, Dennis gave numerous private pitching lessons to kids from college-age, all the way down to his great grandson in Little League. In 2012, he was inducted into the Southwest Washington’s Babe Ruth Hall of Fame. Dennis was also known to be an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he had a story for every logging road he’d ever been on. Dennis belonged to the Unique Tin car club, where he enjoyed participating in the annual Rod Run car show. He never met a stranger and he could talk your ear off for hours. Dennis was an active member of East Kelso Baptist Church, where he considered all members as family. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Ocean Park Eagles, and the National Rifle Association.
Dennis was preceded in death by his father, Lester, and his mother, Geraldine. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Glenda; his three children, Rai-shel Getzlaff, Denean (Corey) Sjoboen, Jason (Carey); his brother Douglas; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Dennis’ life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019, at East Kelso Baptist Church, 110 Corduroy Rd, Kelso, WA. Following will be a potluck.
