March 29, 1922 — Oct. 30, 2018
Virginia May French of Longview passed away Oct. 30, 2018, surrounded by family.
She was born March 29, 1922, in Meriden, Iowa, to Manie Carl and Alita May Olson. She graduated high school in Cherokee, Iowa, in 1939. Virginia married Irvin Wilson French in 1940. They had three children, Gerald, Cheryl and Jacqualine. The family moved to Longview in 1963.
She is survived by a sister, Sharon Mahon of Sioux City, Iowa; her son, Gerald French (Jerrilyn); her daughter, Cheryl Risner (Jack); five grandchildren, Scott Risner, Darrin French, Shannon Sheppard, Sean Risner and Sandra Risner-Cook; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. Her constant companion, Sadie May, her beloved Pomeranian, now resides with her grandson, Sean.
Virginia loved to sing. She sang Ave Maria at her high school graduation. She sang 70 years in church choirs and many years with the Sweet Adelines. She loved her Lord and was involved in many church activities, Girl and Boy Scouts, PTA, and the Odd Fellows’ Rebekahs, where she was a past noble grand. She loved gardening (had a green thumb), sewing clothing and many other crafts.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Irvin; her father, Manie Carl Olson; her mother, Alita May Nelson; her daughter, Jacqualine; a brother, Phillip Olson; and two sisters, Betty Gapp and Judy Stoneking.
Virginia loved the ocean. She and Irvin owned property at Surf Side Estates in Ocean Park. The family spent many weekends and summers there, laughing and singing around the campfire.
The family is grateful to the amazing Hospice nurses, Melanie and Karen, Chaplain Rae, and social worker Dormy.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to Hospice, the United Methodist Presbyterian Church, or a charity of your choice in her name.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Virginia’s life at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Presbyterian Church. A luncheon will follow in the social hall.
