The 42-year-old man who evaded a police manhunt Friday is wanted on a felony warrant for first-degree theft out of Columbia County and is the subject of a Washington State Patrol investigation, according to Longview police.
Derek Nelson Kelley is reportedly armed with a gun and made comments that he is not going to go to prison, according to a Longview PD press release.
Officials said Columbia County law enforcement and Washington State Patrol were looking for Kelley when Cowlitz 911 dispatchers received a report that he was driving on Industrial Way toward Washington Way.
LPD officers attempted to stop Kelley’s vehicle, but he took off at high speed into the oncoming lane of travel, and officers broke off the chase, according to the press release. State troopers spotted the vehicle later and pursued it to the alley between the 800 blocks of Seventh and Eighth avenues.
Officers closed the streets around Victoria Freeman and Seventh Avenue parks for about two hours while they searched for Kelley. A police tracking dog led them to a duplex in the area, but officers did not find Kelley after searching one of the residences. Officers were unable to search the other residence, the release said.
Kelley recently resided at Fisher Island RV Park, located along Willow Grove Connection Road in West Longview, police said.
Police are asking anyone who sees Kelley or knows of his whereabouts to call 911.
