The City of Longview this week received nearly $13,000 in federal grants from the U.S. Department of Justice to enhance public safety.

A little more than $3.3 million was awarded to communities throughout the state as part of the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant program to support state and local organizations working on anti-gang and drug task forces, crime prevention, and officer safety, according to a press release.

The Byrne Grants are named in honor of New York City Police Officer Edward R. Byrne, who was killed in the line of duty on Feb. 26, 1988 when he was 22 years old.
