Local law police warn of skimming scam

Cowlitz county citizens should be on the watch for skimming devices after the scam has resurfaced in surrounding counties, according to local law enforcement agencies.

The Longview Police, Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office and Kelso Police released a public information notice Thursday warning community members to be on the lookout for fake card readers placed over real card readers at gas stations or stores.

The fake readers store card information for later use, according to the notice, but the scam can be easily avoided. Before using a credit card, the notice recommended pulling up on the card reader. The skimming device will come off the real card reader easily, the notice said.

The agencies ask anyone who finds a skimming device to call and report it.
