The Lower Columbia College Geology Club is hosting its Second Annual Volcano Conference and Lawetlat’la Day Wednesday.
Mount St. Helens is known as Lawetlat’la to the Cowlitz tribe.
The event is free and open to the public. It runs from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Student Center cafeteria.
The conference features multiple speakers and musical performances, including keynote speech on monitoring explosive volcanoes by Dr. Alexa Van Eaton at 12:15 p.m.
Other topics include how the volcano was renamed from Lawetlat’la to Mount St. Helens, its geologic history and the long-term indigenous history of the Pacific Northwest. The event will also feature a presentation on the 1980 eruption.
