Lower Columbia College's "Fighting Smelt" debate team has placed fifth in the nation among more than 30 two-year college debate teams for the 2017-18 season.

The team received the award earlier this week in Spokane at the four-day International Public Debate Association (IPDA) National Championships and Convention at Whitworth University, according to an LCC press release. The award was for the team's performance during the entire debating season.

In the Spokane competition, two LCC debaters — Alayna Dalgleish of Longview and Rebecca Pickner of Toutle — reached the top 16 in the Novice IPDA debate. There were 65 competitors. The Fighting Smelt also entered the "brutally competitive" Team IPDA competition while at Whitworth.

LCC placed fourth overall in the Spokane tournament after losing a third-place tiebreaker to the College of Southern Idaho.
