A popular rest stop on Interstate 5 south of Ridgefield is closed until Friday as crews begin upgrade work.
Gee Creek Rest Area on the southbound side of I-5 will be closed until 5 p.m. Friday so crews can fell trees in preparation for other construction, according to a state Department of Transportation press release.
Contractor Tapani Inc. will add a second RV dump station and additional RV parking to reduce congestion at the rest area, said Sam Leiren, WSDOT capital facilities project manager.
The $2.2 million project also includes adding lighting, sidewalk and pavement improvements.
Additional closures of the rest area may be needed as construction continues, according to the press release. Work is expected to be complete this fall.
According to WSDOT, the stop is one of the busiest in the state, with about 800,000 annual visitors.
