Firefighters from Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue and the Longview Fire Department extinguished a wood-chip fire Sunday night at Pacific Fibre Products, which owns a plant at the intersection of California and Industrial ways and Third Avenue.

The 300-by-100 foot fire was initially reported at 7:40 p.m. by a BNSF Railway employee who saw smoke, Longview fire Battalion Chief Jeff Thompson said. Firefighters were on scene by 7:51 p.m. and had the fire under control by 9:11 p.m.. The fire was out and cleanup was turned over to Pacific Fibre at 9:36, Thompson said.

There were no reported injuries, Thompson said.

It wasn’t immediately clear what started the fire, Thompson said, but he added that wood-chip fires can often break out when enough heat is generated from decomposing plant matter in a pile.

Pac Fibre sells bark dust, soil and mulch products.
