Longview Police and Lower Columbia SWAT were on scene Thursday morning at an apparent homicide-suicide that left two dead in the 900 block of Eighth Avenue

The father and son involved in Thursday morning’s homicide-suicide in Longview both died from gunshot wounds to the head, according to the Cowlitz County Coroner’s office.

David Michael Pittore-Montiel, 34, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. His 7-year-old son, Michael Landon Pittore-Montiel, also died from a gunshot wound to the head. The father’s death was ruled a suicide; his son’s death was ruled a homicide, according to Coroner Tim Davidson.

“From evidence obtained from the scene and from the post-mortem examinations it is believed that David Michael Pittore-Montiel shot Michael Landon Pittore-Montiel with a handgun then, using the same handgun, shot himself,” Davidson said in a press release.

At around 5:30 a.m. Thursday, officers responded to the 900 block of Eighth Avenue after a third party called to report that Pittore-Montiel was exhibiting suicidal tendencies.

Shortly after arriving, officers heard gunshots. After evacuating nearby apartments and setting up a perimeter, officers entered the apartment after 6:30 a.m., where they found the bodies of both father and son.

A candlelight vigil was held for David and Michael at 11th Avenue and Broadway, beginning at 7:30 p.m Friday. Michael was a student at Northlake Elementary. David Pittore-Montiel had at one time been a resident of Community House, where the vigil began. The vigil included a march to the Pittore-Montiels’ apartment.
