Kelso police cleared people out of the Kelso High School area Thursday afternoon after a cougar sighting was reported.

The sighting was reported around 3:30 p.m. Officers set up a perimeter around the area from Kelso High School to the Brookhollow Mobile Home Park, according to the Cowlitz County Department of Emergency Services.

A Coweeman Middle School football game was canceled after the sighting. People in the area were asked to stay indoors and bring pets inside as a precaution.

Jeff Wickersham, Fish and Wildlife Region Five captain, said a department officer would evaluate the area to determine if dogs could be brought in to track the cougar.
