Castle Rock's new boat launch has a name: the Al Helenberg Memorial Boat Launch.

The City Council unanimously voted Monday to name the long-awaited launch after Helenberg, a boat builder and community volunteer who died in 2003.

He dedicated countless hours to the project after two drownings illustrated the need for a place to launch rescue boats, said Councilman Glenn Pingree.

Al Helenberg was Mayor Paul Helenberg's brother. However, Pingree said the honor is based solely on his contributions to the project. Paul Helenberg was overcome with emotion during the process. Mayor Pro Tem Earl Queen call for the votes as Helenberg wiped his eyes.

The council also decided the boat launch will be officially dedicated June 19.
