Longview residents — especially those near Lower Columbia College — might want to close their windows as the second part of the Maple Terrace Apartments are burned Saturday.

The vacant apartments are being burned as apart of a training exercise for the Longview Fire Department. The first half of the complex was burned last weekend. No major problems were reported with that fire, though 911 operators were inundated with calls as residents saw the large, black clouds of smoke drift over town.

Maple Street will be closed in front of the buildings, located at 1810 Maple St., but access to the Longview Public Library will be maintained.

Training starts at 8 a.m. and will last until late afternoon. During the live fire period, nearby residents may want to keep windows closed and air conditioners off to minimize smoke intake.

The buildings are being demolished to make way for a new parking lot for LCC.
