Authorities Monday afternoon recovered the body of a Beaverton, Ore., man who died after the Muddy River swept him over Lava Canyon Falls south of Mount St. Helens Sunday afternoon, according to the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office.

James Fowler, 25, died when he attempted to wade across the river just above the falls, according to a press release. He stepped off a partially submerged rock and was swept down the 100-foot falls. A witness on scene observed Fowler’s body floating face down below the falls.

An official search was called off Sunday night and resumed Monday morning, and the Volcano Rescue Team with support from an aircraft pilot found Fowler’s body at about 12:30 p.m. Monday.

Fowler’s remains will be taken to the Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
