Members of the Lower Columbia College Fighting Smelt speech and debate team began their competition season strongly at the Fran Tanner Open tournament at the College of Southern Idaho on Sept. 28 and 29.

The group placed fourth in overall team sweepstakes and placed first among community colleges at the tournament.

Mitchell Levy racked up a 6-0 record on his way to winning the novice division of the IPDA public debate. Named the top novice speaker, he also competed in Impromptu and Persuasive Speaking.

First-year competitor Ayesha Ahmed of Cathlamet received her first career win in collegiate debate.

Next up for the Fighting Smelt is the Steve Hunt Classic at Lewis and Clark College this weekend (Oct. 12-14). They are attending the tournament with a larger team and “hope to remain competitive with the top colleges and universities in the Northwest,” notes a press release.
