The 1980s action movie had a special edge of anarchy to it. Crime was up, and our faith in the proper authorities was down. Like “Death Wish” and “Dirty Harry” before them, the great ‘80s action movies took care to dramatize how those proper authorities were not equal to their task.

An eight-week series on writing about the COVID-19 pandemic being offered through the Longview Public Library and WordFest, takes place form 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays, starting May 5, on Zoom.

As CEO of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, Isaiah Oliver is well known throughout the city. Now as families recover from the water crisis and the pandemic, the foundation and Oliver are building on their reserve of trust and their proximity to the community. As the foundation’s first Flint native and first Black leader since it was founded in 1988, Oliver works to build bridges between marginalized people and wealthy donors.  Even more than the erosion of the city’s water pipes, “the erosion of trust was the biggest issue that came out of the water crisis,” Oliver said in an interview in his office. Rebuilding trust in institutions is a continuing process.

Chinese authorities have closed Tibet's famed Potala Palace after a minor outbreak of COVID-19 in the Himalayan region. The response underscores China's continued adherence to its hard-line “zero-COVID” policy, mandating lockdowns, quarantines and travel restrictions, even while most other countries have reopened. A notice on the palace's social media site said the palace that was the traditional home of Tibet's Buddhist leaders would be closed from Tuesday, with a reopening date to be announced later. Tibet's economy is heavily dependent on tourism and the Potala is a key draw. China announced over 800 new cases of domestic transmission, 22 of them in Tibet. More than 80,000 travelers remain stranded on the southern resort island of Hainan but a first planeload left Tuesday.

Nagasaki is paying tribute to the victims of the U.S. atomic bombing 77 years ago Tuesday. The mayor says Russia’s war on Ukraine showed the world that another nuclear attack is “a tangible and present crisis.” Mayor Tomihisa Taue, in his speech at the Nagasaki Peace Park, said nuclear weapons can be used as long as they exist, and the only way to save the future of humankind is their elimination. The United States made its second atomic attack on Aug. 9, 1945, on Nagasaki, killing 70,000, three days after it dropped the first one on Hiroshima that killed 140,000.
