Broadway Gallery

Classes for children and adults are offered through The Broadway Gallery, 1418 Commerce Ave., Longview.

Supply lists are available at the front desk of the gallery.

Art scholarships are available for students 7 to 18 years old who are interested in art classes and who are otherwise unable to afford the classes. Forms are available at the gallery or by emailing Susan at supolas@gmail.com.

Chinese Brush Painting: 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, May 14, 21 and 28; ages 15 years old to adult. Chinese brush painting involves special bamboo brushes, ink stone, colored ink and rice paper. Experience the freedom of brush strokes that create images such as bamboo, branches, cherry blossoms. Learn the basic holds of the brush, ink preparation, application techniques and the composition of a typical Chinese painting. Supplies, aprons and gloves provided by instructor Beth Bailey as needed; class size limited to three to eight students; $60.

Mixed Media for Children: 4-5 p.m. May 21, June 11, 18 and 25 (Session 2); ages 7-13 years old. Experiment with four different media, watercolor crayon, acrylic paints, charcoals and oil pastels. Students will create with the various mediums and can be inspired by spring themes, such as painting rabbits, birds, flowers and other subjects. Students will base their colors on the color wheel which they will make the first day of class. Wear clothes that can get paint on them. Call teacher Scott McRae in advance if can’t make a class to schedule a makeup class; one to six students per class; $60 for all four classes.

Small Clay Garden Pond: noon-2 p.m. Thursdays, May 23 and June 13; adults. Make an original outdoor pond from stoneware clay. The first class will be forming rolled slabs and decorating with texture. If desired, bring 2-3 items to press images into the clay. Between sessions, the ponds will be dried and bisque fired. In the second class, the ponds will be glazed. They will be fired soon after the second class and will be available for pickup at the gallery after June 18. All supplies and materials provided. Various sample ideas available at the gallery. Instructors Adrienne Stacey and Trudy Woods; limited to eight students; $65.

Drawing and Sketching: 10:30 a.m.-noon Mondays, June 3, 10 and 17; ages 15 years old to adult. Learn to develop drawing skills with a new portable medium that can be fun and unique. See through different eyes using drawing exercises. May work a little outside, weather permitting. Drawing tools included, but students will need to purchase a 9x12 Strathmore drawing pad for practicing and working on some final drawings. Class size limited to three to eight students; $40.
