Sherman Ben Ikerd, 78, of Woodland was born March 3, 1936, in Vacaville, Calif., and passed away Dec. 31, 2014.

He served in the Army for 22 years, retiring with the rank of sergeant first class. He then served another 22 years as a custodian for the Woodland School District. Instead of memorizing all the students names, he greeted all the kids with a “Hi Shorty,” thus earning him the nickname of Shorty. He was very proud of his family, loved to tease, enjoyed a good joke, and lived to fish when time allowed.

Sherman is survived by his wife of 50 years, Viola; their three children, David (Margaret), Steve and Mark (Jennifer); and five grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Feb. 14 at Highland Lutheran Church, 38809 NE 41st Ave., in LaCenter, Wash.

Final arrangements are by Vancouver Funeral Chapel, Vancouver.
