Family matriarch Mable Marie Smith, 96, of Longview passed away May 18, 2014.
She was born Oct. 10, 1917, in Lavaca, Ark., to Bill and Susie (Walker) Childers and attended Lavaca schools.
Mable married John A. Smith on Nov. 2, 1933, in Lavaca. They moved to the local area in the summer of 1947. She became a member of the First Baptist Church in 1948 and was a member of the congregation’s JOY Singers. She loved her family and church family.
Mable retired as a nurse’s aide at Cowlitz General Hospital in 1971. She enjoyed flower gardening, sewing, baking and shopping for a bargain. She was quite and quick-witted.
Mable was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, John, on April 6, 1993.
She is survived by five children, Bill (Betty) in Longview, Alice (Jim, deceased) in Glenoma, Wash., Leon (Betty) in Prineville, Ore., Tom (Cheri) in Roseburg, Ore., and Dave (Maggie) in Woodland; 16 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church, 747 Wheeler St. in Longview. Pastor Mark Ford will officiate. A viewing is planned from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park.
